The Big Bang Theory Episode 6.17, "The Monster Isolation" Review

By JD Shrader /

We are about to enter the final stretch of episodes that will finish out season 6 of The Big Bang Theory, and the plot lines are coming together in the build to the finale. This week these developments are two-fold, with Raj taking center stage in a failed, and then somewhat rekindled romance, and Penny taking the stage and bringing the house down. So the minor story this week involved Penny taking the stage with her acting class, in a production of A Streetcar Named Desire, to which Sheldon kept questioning the car's whereabouts as it was nowhere to be found. What's actually nice about this development is that we finally see Penny do some real acting, and she shows promise. Even Sheldon is impressed, and we all know this is a monumental feat in and of itself. The bigger issue here is that we are seeing the Penny character have some movement on her acting career, which has been all but stagnant throughout the past several seasons. The door this opens is two-fold: will she continue to have success and ultimately leave Leonard behind as the our Big Bang show runs on? Or, will she take the stage in subsequent plays that actually get reviewed and have her acting career fall prey to the reviewer's dagger? Whatever the case may be, it's nice to see the writers moving to develop this aspect of Penny's life. But the major development this week is with Raj! With a nice, surprising change of pace, we actually got the tail end of what was a two-part episode, with Raj finally having some success at love. In a weird twist of fate, Raj's initial date with the unnamed girl goes awry. His friends come to his aid, first attempting to pull him out of his self-loathing state, and secondly by confronting the girl who left him high and dry. Amends are ultimately made, and Raj gets a second chance with the girl he hardly knows, but not before learning that she too has social anxiety issues, much like Raj. Seems that they could both learn something from each other, and that this storyline is here to stay. What say you Big Bang fans? Like the overall arching story developments? On Twitter: @davyshrader
