The Daily Show: 10 Hosts Who Should Replace Jon Stewart

By Tom Baker /

10. John Oliver

For many, John Oliver is the obvious choice. The British stand-up and long time Daily Show correspondent anchored thirty-three episodes the summer Stewart was off working on Rosewater, and did a ruddy good job with it too. So good, in fact, that HBO offered him his own satirical news show: Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, which recently started its second season. Last Week Tonight might even have pinched The Daily Show's satirical crown within its first season, when it tackled big issues in international news with a bolshy, strident point-of-view where most straight journalism would err on the side of caution. Also, they sang a song about saving Russian space sex geckos. The success of his fill-in for Stewart and Last Week Tonight make John Oliver a no-brainer, but also, is he necessarily going to abandon that show so quickly? The Daily Show hosting job is a prestigious position, but it's hard work €“ he almost certainly couldn't do both shows €“ so it'd be a big change.
