4. Captain Mendes

The Flash has always been keen to pay homage to the previous TV show version of the Scarlet Speedster – the short-lived campy series from 1990. As well as recasting that show’s lead John Wesley Shipp as Barry’s dad, they also got Mark Hamill and Amanda Pays to reprise their roles for the series. In Flashpoint, another cast member from that show returns.

In this timeline, the chief of CCPD is not Captain Singh but a character we haven’t met before - Captain Mendes. Actor Alex Desert previously appeared in the 1990 show as Luis Mendes, who in retrospect was something of a precursor to Cisco in the way that he aided Shipp’s version of The Flash.

This recalls the appearance of Vito D’Ambrosio as Mayor Bellows in an episode of season one and two apiece. The actor previously portrayed Tony Bellows, a cop rather than a politician, in the 1990 series.
