After last week's episode of The Handmaid's Tale saw June hospitalised, one would've thought that the hit series would've dialled things back a bit in First Blood. If anything, however, it was actually the opposite that happened.

First Blood is a rollercoaster of an episode, and arguably the best of the season so far - primarily because we were witness to the first attack in what could possibly be an uprising.

What's more, the subtle moments were just as good as the explosive ones: Nick's conflict over his new bride and Serena Waterford's blossoming friendship with her handmaid were high points for the episode. Elsewhere, the Gilead commanders gathered to congratulate themselves (nothing new there then) on the opening of the new Red Centre, and Ofglen uses this opportunity to exact revenge on her superiors for removing her tongue.

Stacked full of shocks from beginning to end, First Blood proved to be one of The Handmaid's Tale's strongest hours thus far, and it has left us with plenty to contemplate.
