The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen TV Show: 5 Victorian Characters We Want To See

By David Bailey /

2. Bertha Mason (Jane Eyre)

Bertha is one crazy bird. After burning down Thornfield Hall just because she liked to watch the flames dancing in the moonlight, she€™s committed to a Maximum Security Lunatic Asylum, where she regularly shivs other inmates. But prison bars can€™t hold Crazy Bertie, no sir. During a therapy session with the asylum administrator, Dr. Seward, she takes him hostage by putting him in a choke hold with her hair. Once she€™s out, she goes on a rampage through England, just burning places to the ground, left and right. It€™s up to the League to track her down and toss her back into the loony bin. Subplot: Mr. Hyde has a thing for her! You know, because they€™re both a little cuckoo. He gives her an eloquent, very un-Hyde-like speech to talk her out of burning down the under-construction Tower Bridge, and she willingly goes back to the asylum with him. But right when she€™s back behind bars, he turns back into Jekyll, and he€™s... yeah, he€™s just not into it. She swears vengeance against both of them and will probably come back in Season 2.
