4. The Principal And The Pauper

Maligned by fans and critics alike as marking the end of The Simpsons' €˜Golden Age€™, The Principal and the Pauper had the audacity to take a familiar, well-loved character and reveal him as an impostor. Apparently inspired by Victorian England€™s infamous Tichborne case, the episode sees Principal Skinner reveal that he is actually Armin Tamzarian €“ a fraud who stole the identity of the real Seymour Skinner, a Vietnam War comrade he believed to be dead. Viewers weren€™t the only ones annoyed at this big character reveal, and while former showrunner Josh Weinstein ranks it up there with his best-loved episodes, Principal Skinner€™s voice actor Harry Shearer disagreed, calling the episode "disrespectful to audiences."
