The Simpsons: 8 Reasons Why Season 8 Was The Show's Best
3. Amazing One Off Characters
John and Shery Bobbins have already gotten a mention, but the eccentric collection of one timers is richer this season than it’s ever been. While newer seasons have relied a little too much on celebrity guests to pad out the cast, back in Season 8 they were churning out gems.
There’s Rex Banner, new chief of police brought in to stop corrupt officers from ignoring prohibition (and sticking their badges in their mouths). Rex was played so straight he went past dull and circled back around to hilarious; you can see the confidence the team had in their writing to make a character this boring be this memorable. They tried a similar character in Season 14 (private eye Dexter Colt) and had much less success with the trope.
Then there’s Larry Burns, who can’t seem to deliver a single line without etching it permanently into The Simpsons history of iconic quotes. The character brought a dynamic that bounced off both Homer and Mr Burns brilliantly.
And of course, who could forget Frank Grimes, or Grimey, as he liked to be called.
Plus there’s one character we’ve still not mentioned...
