Over the course of "This Sorrowful Life," Merle's guilt over the lives he'd taken for The Governor and his honest desire to make his brother happy led to a one-man war against his former leader and other members of Woodbury.

Unfortunately, Merle was subdued, had his fingers bitten off and was shot and left to turn by The Governor, only to be found as a walker and finished off by an emotionally devastated Daryl.
