The Walking Dead Season 11 Review: 3 Ups & 7 Downs From "Out Of The Ashes"

3. UP: The Chilling Cold Open

Out of the Ashes kicks off with the season's best cold open yet, following Aaron and his daughter Gracie as they venture through the woods.

Seemingly lost, the pair come across one of the Wolves from the show's fifth season, a lone Saviour, and a group of Whisperers. Gracie then disappears, and Aaron is brutally stabbed to death.

Of course, this is all a nightmare, one that gives some horrifying but mostly unexplored insight into Aaron's twisted psyche and overflowing sense of hopelessness.

With moody visuals and entertaining call-backs to the series' many former bad guys, the episode starts on the right foot and acts as a thrilling slice of fan service. It's just a shame it never really comes to anything.
