The Walking Dead Season 6: 18 Easter Eggs You Probably Missed
Even a show in a post-apocalyptic world has some references and in-jokes.
We're now a little bit removed from The Walking Dead's Season 6 finale, which means some of the ire and controversy surrounding it has had a chance to subside.
Oh, what's that, everyone is still really angry about it? Yeah, figures. The cliffhanger ending to The Walking Dead's sixth season has backfired spectacularly; critics hated it and fans are furious, with good reason.
It was a total cop-out, one that ruined what should have been one of the biggest moments of the entire series to date. It also spoilt what was up until that point an excellent episode, coming at the end of its strongest run in years.
It's worth remembering, even as we stew for the next 7 months over that decision and just which character has had his/her skull smashed in, that Season 6 was at times very good, in particular the back-half. It had all the typical action and gore you'd expect, but it also had some nice moments of character development, introduced a fantastic new villain, and expanded the scope of the world without repeating the typical Walking Dead formula of moving from place to place.
It also had a lot of references, nods, and in-jokes. You might not expect them from such a self-contained show as The Walking Dead, but with Robert Kirkman's comics to draw upon, and Greg Nicotero working behind the scenes, there's plenty you might have missed in Season 6.
18. Off The Bat
A line from the midseason premiere of The Walking Dead Season 6, from the leader of the Saviours who confront Abraham, Sasha, and Daryl: "See usually, we introduce ourselves by just popping one of you right off the bat."
Just incase that wasn't on-the-nose enough, allow Jesus to take it a little further in episode 11, Knots Untie: "He beat him to death right in front of us ... said we needed to understand right off the bat."
See, this is a nice bit of foreshadowing for Negan, whose weapon of choice is a baseball bat. Good job that The Walking Dead is about as subtle as a barbed-wire-wrapped bat to the face.
