The time for talking is over. The armies have been gathered, the battle lines drawn, and it's time to head into war.

So goes the basic outline for the eighth season of The Walking Dead, which will finally give us the major conflict between Rick and his allies and Negan and the Saviours.

Season 8 should represent something of an improvement for the show: after the plodding nature of Season 7, the war storyline should bring about a serious ramping up in terms of excitement, action, and stakes.

This war is something that the show has long been building towards, using pretty much all of Season 7 as simply a prologue for what's to come. It was inevitable that it would reach this point, though, because the conflict is a major storyline from the comics (and while the show does diverge, it tends to hit the main beats).

Called All Out War, it spanned 12 issues of the comic - split into two volumes - from October 2013 to April 2014, and was a brutal, bloody battle that saw numerous casualties, twists and turns, and both sides looking like emerging victorious at various points.

The TV show will need to forge its own path with the war, but there is a lot that'll likely turn out at least very similar if not directly the same, and plenty we can learn about Season 8 by looking to the comics. (Contains comic book spoilers, obviously.)
