One of the best plot devices of Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster is the role reversal. The monster isn't a man turning into an animal, it's an animal, turning into a man. Why? Because it was a case of "man bites animal" - and the ensuing juxtaposition of how we see ourselves vs. how the newly human Guy Mann interprets human life is absolutely priceless. Yet it all starts off with this moment: an animal defending itself, caught in the middle of an attack between humans, like a National Geographic documentary or Shark Week being turned on its head. Guy Mann in lizard form attempts to hide, then scare off his attackers. For his troubles, he is bitten by the dangerous predator that is man, and cursed to turn into one each day.
