The Walking Dead: 6 Things "Slabtown" Did Right (And 4 It Didn't)

5. Sympathetic New Characters

When a new character shows up on The Walking Dead, they€™re usually doomed to one of two fates: being a shifty so-and-so that€™s going to trick or otherwise come up against the group, or they€™re going to be walker fodder pretty quickly. Occasionally somebody breaks through and gets to join Rick and his pals for a time, but for the most part, a new addition to the cast is either somebody who€™s going to be knocked off or be an antagonist. Which is why it was rather refreshing that not every new character who turned up in Slabtown was a total psychopath. Most of them were, obviously, but there were a few good €˜uns in the mix to keep that low flickering flame in humanity from being extinguished. Dawn was a complete nutter (more on that sooner rather than later), as was the majority of her "staff", but a couple of roses were visible amongst the thorns. Dr Steven Edwards may have had some questionable methods for survival but, ultimately, he seemed like a genuinely empathetic soul - chatting to Beth about Caravaggio, letting her eat some of his roast guinea pig - hey, times are tough - and never asking for anything in return, which was out of step with the rest of the group. Noah too was a decent sort, even more so than the good doctor, which is a surprisingly sunny twosome for The Walking Dead.
