New rumour suggests Netflix and Marvel are going more supernatural.

Despite an overall feel to the Netflix Marvel universe that grounds it more in reality (aside from the Hand in Daredevil's season 2, of course), it looks like there's going to be a big swerve towards the supernatural. If a new rumour - posted by ScreenGeeks - is to be believed, Netflix are going to unveil a giant demonic villain to face Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage when they team up as the Defenders:

Marvel is talking about setting Mephisto as the prime antagonist for the Defenders. Some may say that this villain wouldnt fit the TV shows but thats why theyre incorporating Iron Fist to set up the supernatural element. This would also help set up the next phase of the Netflix shows, as Moon Knight, Blade, and Ghost Rider are being considered.

They're going with the "unnamed source close to the situation" explanation for the rumour, so maybe take it with a large grain of salt.

The extra-dimensional demon is basically Satan, scheming with victims to take their souls and has a particular penchant for superhero souls. That's seen him battle the Fantastic Four, the Silver Surfer, Thor, Daredevil, and Doctor Strange, and we've actually already seen the character twice in the Ghost Rider movies.

Apparently, Mephisto's appearance will then set up more supernatural characters, with the likes of Moon Knight, Blade and Ghost Rider rumoured to be under consideration. Having him as the big bad across that whole universe would be a smart move too, though personally I think it's far more likely he'll appear as a villain in a Doctor Strange movie.
