Despite the will of the audience and Vince McMahon himself, 'HBK' has politely declined increasingly lucrative opportunities to grace the stage in place of carefully managed non-wrestling performances.

After 'one more match' hopes were routinely dashed, fans were given reason to dream again when he took on a role as a Performance Center trainer in late-2016.

Then, of all things, a completely fabricated Royal Rumble poster fantasy booking a dream match between Michaels and AJ Styles moved conversation on his potential return back up the agenda. As unlikely as a comeback has always been for Shawn, the San Antonio locale twenty years on from his famous Royal Rumble 1997 WWE Title victory made for a great setting, and Styles the seemingly perfect foe.

Of course, this too proved a pipe dream, but Shawn himself appeared surprisingly agreeable to re-lacing the boots in a 'Table For 3' WWE Network special that openly acknowledged the tease. Delving deep into why they'd fight and who would win, Michaels was intriguing in his assessment of the potential scrap, possibly implying that if all the pieces truly fit, he may tune up the band one more time.
