Three months following the storied plane crash involving Johnny Valentine, promoter David Crockett and wrestlers Tim Woods and Bob Bruggers, Ric Flair returned to the ring in Greensboro, North Carolina to face his then adversary Wahoo McDaniel. McDaniel and Flair were feuding prior to the crash, the incident becoming major news actually leading to a surge in popularity for Flair. In a match for McDaniel's United States Championship, Flair won by countout as he beat the referee's count to get back into the ring. A grudge feud that continued on for years past this point, Flair points to successfully making a return after such a harrowing incident that ended the careers of the legendary Valentine and veteran Bruggers as a turning point in his own legacy.
