10 Best WWE Matches That Happened Outside America
Some of the best matches in WWF/E history did not take place on the big shows in America or Canada.
If WWE fans are asked about some of the biggest and best matches in the company's history, the majority of those that would make this list would be made up of WrestleMania main events or classic mid-card Intercontinental Title bouts from early SummerSlam or other pay-per-views.
However, some of the best bouts in WWF/E history didn’t happen at these major events on US or Canadian soil, they happened in the UK, Germany, Japan, South Africa and beyond.
Some of these bouts went unseen for years due to broadcasting rights, never seeing the light of day outside of clips or stills - and also not being available via Coliseum Video and Silver Vision at the time.
Now with the WWE Network, all of these can be enjoyed or even discovered for the very first time. Some were on major cards like SummerSlam or NXT Takeovers, but others were harder to come by.
What once were matches that were only spoken of in grandiose terms by those in attendance got a new audience when they found their way online...
10. The Rock Vs Stone Cold - Rebellion
2001 was centred around two things in WWE: the Invasion angle and the feud between The Rock and Stone Cold.
At WrestleMania X-Seven - still regarded as the finest in WrestleMania history - Austin defeated The Rock to capture the WWF Championship after a shocking deal with the Devil as he sided with long-time nemesis Vince McMahon to the shock of fans worldwide. Austin’s habit of forming strange alliances continued later in the year as the increasingly paranoid Rattlesnake turned his back on the WWF and joined the ECWCW Alliance at Invasion, setting Stone Cold back at loggerheads with Vince McMahon and The Rock.
At this point, WWF/E was running semi-regular UK exclusive pay-per-view events with Sky Box Office and in 2001 Rebellion came from the Manchester Arena and was headlined by another match for the title between the two biggest stars in the business. The event was not long before the pivotal winner takes all Survivor Series, so tensions between the Alliance and WWF were palpable and suspicions over potential double-crosses were at fever pitch - and with good reason. The Rock and Austin fought in front of a rabid Manchester crowd in a match full of ref bumps and interference.
A staple of this wild era.
