This main event from SummerSlam 2003 was only the second Elimination Chamber match in WWE history. The first had taken place in November, 2002 at the Survivor Series event, and is memorable for being the night on which Shawn Michaels captured the World Heavyweight Championship. At SummerSlam, Michaels was involved once more, this time vying for the gold along with Goldberg, Kevin Nash, Chris Jericho, Randy Orton and Triple H. As the reigning champ, Triple H was said to be facing a near-impossible job defending his title by the announcers. 'The Game' had held the strap since December of the previous year, when he defeated none other than Michaels to regain the prize. At SummerSlam '03, fans were enthused to see the bout, because there really seemed to be a great chance that a new champ would be crowned. Eventually, Triple H would manage to retain, but not before a whole load of thrills and spills. It seemed likely that Goldberg would be the one chosen to dethrone HHH, which he would do the next month at Unforgiven, but SummerSlam was not his time. Despite anger from fans that the title didn't change hands, this was still a high quality match. Even though the card also featured Brock Lesnar vs. Kurt Angle, the Elimination Chamber deservedly headlined.
