10 Best WWE SummerSlam Openers
6. The Hart Foundation Vs. The Brainbusters - 1989
The kickoff to SummerSlam 1989 was something of a 1980s tag team dream match. The 'Busters were fresh off of winning the WWE Tag Team Titles here but, for some reason, the belts were not on the line. Which is strange, because Tully and Arn ended up winning the match anyway, so it's not like they really needed to be protected or anything.
Anyhow, the action was good if not blowaway great or anything. These teams excelled at tag team wrestling and had the formula down pat. They kept this one interesting, mixing up pure wrestling with brawling and tag team shenanigans, with the Brainbusters wearing down Neidhart in the middle portion, draining the power out of the barrel-chested big man.
The Hitman finally received the token hot tag and came in and cleaned house, but the four men seemed to get a little bit lost at the end. For the finish, Neidhart slammed Bret onto Tully, but Arn came in and reversed it behind the referees back. The closing stages might have been a little shaky, but the action overall was what you would expect from these four pros.
