10 Best WWF Matches Of The 1980s

3. Hulk Hogan vs. Roddy Piper - 2/18/85

For the purposes of being everything that Vince McMahon needed to differentiate the WWF from all other pro wrestling that had been done before he took over the promotion, the "Rock and Wrestling" era is perfect. Thus, as a stepping stone between "Rock and Wrestling" and "Wrestlemania," the "War To Settle The Score" bout between Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper more than did the trick. There were no two bigger pop cultural icons in the world in 1985 than Cyndi Lauper and Mr. T. Somehow, Captain Lou Albano works well with Cyndi, and Piper doing his dead level best to marshal all of his antics from Portland, Los Angeles and the Mid-Atlantic into a vitriolic mass of humanity unleashed on then pop cultural oddity MTV. One key thing to always remember about any time Vince McMahon puts wrestling in the public spotlight, is that the match is oftentimes secondary to the statement it makes.
