Kalisto's upset win over Alberto Del Rio for the U.S. Title on Raw earlier in the month got many fans hoping that WWE had decided to create a new star. Unfortunately, he held the gold for exactly one day, dropping it back to the less-than-inspiring Del Rio on the episode of Smackdown taped the following evening. Kalisto still had his rematch clause, though, and a third title bout between the two was set for the Royal Rumble. Most expected Kalisto would put up a dramatic fight before ultimately falling to the United States Champion, thereby ending the program. Indeed, the former NXT star was exciting, weathering a bad fall on his head and coming back with the Salida del Sol. Del Rio managed to get to the rope, though, staying in the match and seemingly telegraphing his win. Surprisingly, though, Kalisto avoided the double foot stomp from Del Rio, then came back with another Salida del Sol for the win. Kalisto's victory was a pleasant surprise that hopefully heralds big things for the exciting competitor. Here's hoping he doesn't lose the belt tonight.
