When The Nexus debuted in 2010, they did so with more impact and more controversy than any faction in WWE history. Led by Wade Barrett, the NXT rookies beat down John Cena, CM Punk, Luke Gallows, Jerry Lawler and anyone else that got in their way. They destroyed the ring, demolished the ringside area and left fans in stunned silence. The Nexus had wreaked total havoc on WWE and they spent the next several months continuing that trend. While many WWE Superstars stood up to fight them, no one was able to even make a dent. Barrett's crew was unstoppable and indestructible. However, all of that changed at SummerSlam. The Nexus faced off against Team WWE. Comprised of Daniel Bryan, Edge, Chris Jericho, R-Truth, John Morrison, Bret Hart and John Cena, Team WWE had a showdown with The Nexus that had been building since June of 2010. The Nexus had been completely dominant up to that point and fans expected more of the same at SummerSlam. However, that did not happen as Cena was the last man standing while The Nexus was left licking its wounds. And John did it in typical Cena style; he took his fair share of heat in this match, including a DDT on the floor, yet just kept right on going. Perhaps if WWE had more time for this main event, then the outcome would have been more realistic and more believable. But for many fans, nothing could have excused the most powerful faction that WWE had ever known coming out on the losing end of a match they should have won. This marked the first time that all seven members tasted real defeat on the same night and it ultimately led to their downfall just four months later. Fans had believed in their dominance to a point but when it became evident Cena would destroy them, they did not believe anymore. Had The Nexus won, who knows what direction WWE could have taken with the storyline for the rest of 2010, or perhaps even beyond that. Unfortunately, fans will never know.
