Learning The Ropes was, as you might be able to guess from the title, a sitcom about pro wrestling. Former NFL star Lyle Alzado starred as a teacher who moonlighted as a masked professional wrestler, with wacky hijinks ensuing as he tried to keep his wrestling life a secret. Why did he have to keep it a secret? Who knows? Nobody had any problems with Shane Douglas doing the same thing in real life. Anyway, with Jim Crockett Promotions (the precursor to WCW) involved in the show's production, a number of well-known wrestlers appeared on the show, including Steve "Dr. Death" Williams as Alzado's stunt double. So, what makes "Captain Redneck" Dick Murdoch's guest appearance stick out? He gets the A-plot. And he's awesome in it.See, Dick's ex-wife shows up and shenanigans ensue. He's such a goofball and a natural performer that he outdoes most of the cast. He'd be one of the last people you'd expect to get cast, even on a wrestling-themed sitcom that got talent from his employer. He especially outshines Alzado, who, in spite of being the lead, never really got good during the run of the show.
