10 Clean Wins Over Top WWE Stars That Were Totally Wasted
10. Dean Ambrose Def. John Cena (SmackDown - 20 Sept 2016)
Dean Ambrose was on top of the world in summer 2016. Having finally become the last Shield member to win the WWE Championship at Money In The Bank, he carried the company's top prize to SmackDown after defeating Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins at Battleground. WWE had finally made him 'The Guy,' and he mounted a successful defence against Dolph Ziggler at SummerSlam, before moving into a feud with AJ Styles.
'The Lunatic Fringe' lost his belt to 'The Phenomenal One' at Backlash on 11 September, but WWE had the perfect way to rebuild his momentum eight days later, when he pinned John Cena on SmackDown. It was the (then) 15-time World Champion's first weekly TV loss in close to seven years, and felt like a massive deal as the show concluded, but it ultimately went nowhere.
Cena, Styles, and Ambrose fought a WWE Title Triple Threat at No Mercy. AJ won, and while Dean wasn't pinned, he soon slid down the rankings. Styles defeated him at TLC, and Ambrose fell into the Intercontinental Title picture. He won the belt, but a listless reign and never-ending feud with The Miz spelt doom for what little momentum remained from the Cena victory.
