10 Current WWE Observations From A Lapsed Fan

10. Dolph Ziggler Is Just Billy Gunn For A New Generation

Whilst nobody can claim that the man has had a poor career, Dolph Ziggler's most loyal fans will chew your ear off about the idea that the wrestler could have been even bigger if WWE had been willing to let him. At it stands, Ziggler is a big star in the promotion, but he will likely never be perceived as the man, the franchise player of the company. Instead, he's simply a guy management can rely on for excellent matches against pretty much anybody. Now, this is not where the comparisons with Billy Gunn come in, because Gunn - whether as a tag-team or singles competitor - was never really a stand out technically. No, the similarities start to crop up when exploring the overall visual aesthetic of both men and some of their move choices. To those who haven't watched the product since 2001, Ziggler comes across like a young Billy Gunn. A bleach-blonde, swaggering look directly correlates with the one Gunn favoured as the comical 'Mr. Ass', and Dolph even uses Billy's 'Fame-Asser' move in his arsenal. Ziggler has managed to achieve more in a shorter space of time than Gunn ever did, but he is still that upper-card performer who just can't crack the main event scene permanently.
