It was a bold experiment, and the first time ECW were promoting a show on Pay-Per-View, but even though Barely Legal 1997 will go down in history as a landmark moment for the company, it wasn't exactly a stellar show. One of the promotion's biggest storylines was also one of their longest-running rivalries, and it was simply a must that Taz clashed with Sabu on the show. A lot of fans would end up being disappointed with the match itself, feeling the hype outweighed the actual content of the bout, but Taz and Sabu worked hard to put on a lengthy battle which would satisfy on Pay-Per-View, and that must be commended. Certainly, it's the closest the show ever came to being above average, which may seem like an unfair piece of criticism, but Barely Legal didn't have a lot else going for it. Putting Taz against Sabu was a master stroke from Paul Heyman, because it was relatively big time, especially next to inconsequential matches such as Shane Douglas vs. Pitbull #2 and an awkward main event that had Terry Funk, The Sandman and Stevie Richards trading spots.
