Now, after images of the wrestlers involved have danced to the forefront of your brain, try to think about what made that match so memorable. Was it those fuzzy waves of nostalgia? Buckets of blood? A commentary call so good it sent chills racing up your spine? A cool finish? It had to be something, otherwise you wouldn't have instantly remembered it.

Spare a thought for those headline matches that don't get that sort of perma-love or appreciation from wrestling fans. All too often they're pushed to the back of the line so The Rock vs. Steve Austin from WrestleMania X-Seven, Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker from 'Mania XXV or CM Punk vs. John Cena from Money In The Bank 2011 (all prime candidates for best main event ever) can hog all the joy.

To date, WWE has raced through hundreds of pay-per-view specials since the company began producing on that medium in 1985. That means there are a hell of a lot of matches consigned to the waste dumps of fan brains. This list is here to sort that out.
