10 Great Wrestlers That Suffered Burials
3. Drew McIntyre
2020’s Royal Rumble winner is riding high right now thanks to his popular feud with Brock Lesnar but it hasn’t always been smooth sailing for the Chosen One.
Turning all the way back to 2009, a 24 year old McIntyre was debuted by Vince McMahon himself. Presented as a prodigy and future megastar, the young and brash McIntyre quickly nabbed the Intercontinental title from John Morrison a couple of months later. McIntyre received plentiful crowd heat thanks to his frequent mistreatment of SmackDown GM Teddy Long and hard hitting matches with the likes of Kofi Kingston, Matt Hardy and Kane.
A sudden downturn in the Scottish Psychopath’s fortunes occurred after dropping the IC belt to Kingston. After a publicised altercation with then wife Taryn Terrell at the Playboy Mansion and an unfortunate visa issue, WWE decided to pull the plug. Catapulting down the card, McIntyre often struggled for TV time at all yet alone victories.
McIntyre was eventually repackaged as one third of the comedy undercard act 3MB with future WWE champ Jinder Mahal and Heath Slater (can we expect a bulk up and main event run from Slater next to complete the trifecta?). Though amusing, 3MB’s ceiling was painfully low and McIntyre was released from the company in mid 2014.
Fortunately, McIntyre ultimately overcame his burial thanks to a successful run on the indies and his subsequent return to WWE in 2017.
