10 Greatest Champions In Professional Wrestling Today
"The title doesn't make the guy. The guy makes the title."
Championships are the backbone of the 'sports' in sports entertainment.
They represent the prize that wrestlers chase, hoping to etch their names into the history books. Without them, people would just be feuding over spilt coffee, or constantly tangled in some sort of love triangle. Belts represent a legitimate reason for pro wrestling as a competition. Over the years, however, certain titles gain and lose prestige.
Is this down to the belts themselves? Nope: it's down to the person whose waist they are around.
If you've ever thought 'I'd really love this title reign to end soon,' you appreciate a good title-holder - someone who makes the belt seem like the ultimate prize, something that challengers will be queuing up to get their shots at. This list presents the greatest pro wrestling champions currently operating. They may have the weight of divisions, companies, or even multiple companies on their shoulders.
Either way, they carry their championships with pride, and bring legitimacy to the world of professional wrestling.
10. Lashley - Impact Wrestling Heavyweight Champion
Impact Wrestling has undergone a tumultuous start to 2017. Management decided to drop the 'TNA' moniker, and now there's been a full merger with Jeff Jarrett's Global Force Wrestling.
Management also decided the man to lead as the face of the company, through all this commotion, was Bobby Lashley. Bringing MMA legitimacy to the main event, Impact may have been hoping for a Lesnar-esque draw (on a smaller scale, naturally) as their Heavyweight champion. It hasn't exactly panned out that way - but Lashley is still an athletic freak.
So far in 2017, Lashley has seen off former champions Eddie Edwards and Jeff Hardy. Some might say he lost some prestige by losing to El Patron via shenanigans, and he maybe could have done without the Josh Barnett match. Either way, Impact are in a serious rebuilding phase and Lashley is their chosen poster boy, so his Heavyweight Championship dominance should continue.
