4. Roddy Piper Versus MTV

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xbuom9_the-gold-record-incident_sport Before the first Wrestlemania, and kickstarting Vince McMahon and the WWF€™s ongoing fascination with crossing over to mainstream notoriety, there was this incident on MTV in February 1985. During an award ceremony at Madison Square Garden for Lou Albano officiated by pop sensation Cindy Lauper, €˜Rowdy€™ Roddy Piper would interrupt to tear strips off the burgeoning €˜Rock & Wrestling€™ angle that would be the focus of Wrestlemania a few weeks later on. Piper would then smash the award, a commemorative gold record replica, over Albano€™s head €“ and then slam Lauper€™s real life manager (and non-wrestler) David Wolff. Piper€™s interruption was so realistic at the time (remember, this was in the days when kayfabe ruled and the business was still protected) that a New York cop at ringside would actually try to intervene, causing Piper to inadvertently hurt Wolff for real.
