The start of something special, or a huge, crushing bust?
All Elite Wrestling's Double Or Nothing pay-per-view finally hits Las Vegas this Saturday night (25 May), and the stakes have rarely been higher.
This could be the start of something special. The nascent promotion is on the verge of bringing true competition back to the North American wrestling scene for the first time since WCW died in 2001. They have signed a stacked roster, secured a lucrative TV deal described as "unprecedented for a start-up," and now stand an incredible chance of capturing the zeitgeist as a genuine WWE alternative - something that would've sounded impossible prior to 2018's home-run ALL IN event.
AEW talk a good game, and they've assembled one hell of a card. Hype, hope, and expectations are through the roof. Now, all they have to do is deliver. Nothing else matters if they can't do that, though the past few years have shown that doubting Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega, and The Young Bucks is a foolish endeavour.
PAC vs. Hangman Page is gone, but Omega vs. Chris Jericho II, The Lucha Brothers vs. the Bucks, and Cody vs. Dustin Rhodes remain. It's an awesome card. Let's look at how it might play out...
10. Kip Sabian Vs. Sammy Guevara
This bout will likely open Double Or Nothing's pre-show, 'The Buy In,' which will air live on All Elite Wrestling's YouTube channel, Bleacher Report Live, and ITV4 in the United Kingdom, and it comes following a minor card reshuffle. Alongside Brandon Cutler and Sonny Kiss, Kip Sabian was among the original batch of wrestlers confirmed for the Casino Battle Royale on 20 February. 8 May then brought the announced that he'll face former AAA World Cruiserweight Champion Sammy Guevara instead.
Guevara is being built as a pest and a nuisance on Being The Elite. An annoying dork lacking in self-awareness, he is constantly badgering the rest of the cast (and his own mother) with his own YouTube channel and merchandise. Sabian, meanwhile, was one of the British indie circuit's more effective heels before AEW snapped him up. Thus, this could be a throwdown between two of the promotion's biggest irritants, even if Guevara's harsh BTE treatment gives the impression he'll be working babyface.
One of the world's fastest rising high-flyers he may be, but expect Sammy to fall here. He'll probably get distracted by pandas or something.
