When Rob Van Dam pinned John Cena in front of the most hostile crowd in WWE history in June 2006, to finally become the WWE Champion, The Whole F'n Show could have been forgiven for thinking he had finally made it. After years of being the most popular guy on the undercard, it seemed as though RVD was finally getting his dues in the shape of a World Title run - and a much-deserved one at that. What could go wrong?

Quite a lot, actually. RVD was soon busted for marijuana possession and subsequently lost both the WWE and ECW Championships in the space of just a couple of days. By the end of 2007, he was gone from the company altogether. A one night return at the 2009 Royal Rumble reminded everyone he was still around, but Van Dam didn't return to WWE on a full time basis until 2013.

At Night of Champions 2013, RVD unsuccessfully challenged Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight Championship in what was his first match for a World title in WWE for just over seven years. RVD has since waited just over three years for another - although being away from the company makes it hard to get one.
