10 Moments Which Define The Undertaker's WrestleMania Legacy
'Mania's standard-bearer is gone, but his greatest memories will endure.
One of the most iconic careers in wrestling history came to an end when The Undertaker fell to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 33. Coupled with 'Taker's symbolic post-match actions, the defeat had all the hallmarks of a last stand. 'The Deadman's battle-ravaged body had finally given-up on him, and after he'd limped through one of the saddest performances of his career before leaving his gear in the ring, everybody knew this was "the end".
Thus concluded a legendary run of over 26 years that saw 'Taker not only become a seven-time World Champion, but a WWE institution. Though lined with gold, 'The Phenom's career transcends mere championships and accolades, and after compiling an incredible record on the sport's biggest stage, Undertaker's career will always be linked to WWE's flagship pay-per-view.
His streak began with a win over Jimmy Snuka in 1991, and while it took several years to really get going, it eventually became an important part of 'Mania folklore. When you think of WrestleMania, it's impossible not to think of The Undertaker too, and while it'd be a stretch to say he'd be nothing without the event, it's hard to imagine him reaching such legendary status without his resumé of memorable moments...
10. The Streak Begins (WrestleMania VII)
As far as 'the streak' goes, WrestleMania VII was where it all began. The Undertaker had only been part of WWE’s active roster for four months, but he’d already made an impact following his memorable Survivor Series 1990 debut. He replaced Brother Love with Paul Bearer as his manager and squashed countless wrestlers on the road to WrestleMania, building his aura of invincibility, and presenting himself as a huge deal.
Though 'Taker’s career didn’t really take-off until after the event, his match with Jimmy Snuka was a major turning point. The bout itself was nothing special, and panned out as little more than an extended squash, but it kick-started his legendary 'Mania run, and for that reason, it retains an important place in 'The Deadman’s career history.
Undertaker surged in the aftermath. He started his first major feud with The Ultimate Warrior shortly after, and soon entered the WWE Championship picture, defeating Hulk Hogan for the belt at Survivor Series 1991, just over a year after debuting. Though his push was always forthcoming, 'Taker’s first match on the biggest show of the year should be seen as a springboard, and a pivotal moment in his young career.
