The idea was sound enough, but extremely flawed in execution. During the very first season of Tough Enough, Triple H strolled into the ring, delivering quite the promo on what it means to dedicate your life to the then-World Wrestling Federation. There's nothing wrong there, the man was only telling the truth, but the whole spiel about family and tradition wasn't really helped by the fact that 'The Game' then tried to put some of the entrants through their paces, moments after scaring them half to death. Admittedly, the guy did praise some of the punches being thrown, as well as the selling, but the whole experience didn't really seem to help anyone, instead the contestants just kind of stood around looking terrified. What should have been a golden lesson turned into one that was all bluster, more of the same talk of how easy the Tough Enough folks had it compared to the rest of the roster. In essence, Triple H was letting everyone from Tough Enough know that if they were lucky enough to reach the main WWF roster, they'd have big targets painted on their backs because of how they entered the business. Let's not forget, this was the promotion's own idea, so punishing people for being excited and wanting to take advantage of opportunity makes no sense.
