10 Most Shocking WWE PPV Main Events Ever
2. The Rock Vs. Steve Austin - WrestleMania X-Seven
After Steve Austin spent a year on the shelf with neck surgery, he came back to a very different WWE. Not only had a host of new stars debuted and risen up the card, but The Rock had supplanted him as the most popular man in the company. Austin ended up winning the 2001 Royal Rumble to get a title shot at WrestleMania X-Seven, but when The Rock won the belt at No Way Out, they were on a collision course.
Their showdown was one of the most anticipated main events in WrestleMania history - on one side was the man who had become the top star in wrestling, and on the other was his old rival who wanted to reclaim that position. They fought each other in a bout that was gripping, but not in any unexpected way... until Vince McMahon came out.
McMahon, Austin's archenemy, was also on poor terms with The Rock, so his presence was odd. When he broke up a pin attempt by The Rock, fans were confused, but it turned out that was only the tip of the iceberg. As both men fought and traded finishers, McMahon waited at ringside, then gave Austin a chair. Together, the two hated men orchestrated an attack on The Rock, one that culminated with 16 chairshots, a new champion, and a most unholy alliance.
