10 Most Tone-Deaf WWE Moments
2. Bye Bye Bret
"I swear to god, my hands are clean", a dirty-handed Shawn Michaels said to Bret Hart before he believed in god. Or karma. Or good will. Or life itself.
Shawn Michaels had a few more of those billy bullsh*tter lines up his sleeve before 'The Hitman' was finally allowed to get on with his career in peace in the wake of the Montreal Screwjob, but his set-up for one of D-Generation X's silliest payoffs that year earnestly sold a final verbal showdown of sorts with his ferocious foe.
'HBK' took the microphone at the top of the show to cut a promo designed to keep viewers glued to a second hour Survivor Series review with Hart himself. Performer Shawn was in his pomp selling and smelling his own line of bullsh*t, but the payoff spoke loudest to Vince McMahon's base instincts. A little person was sent out in a Bret Hart mask, then sent packing with a 'WCW' sticker on his a*se.
WWE clearly weren't f*cking around in the wrestling war anymore, but the wrong victim had been chosen for their latest shot across the bow. Hart was an honourable and loyal servant bantered off worse than some actual money-grabbing WCW escapees.
Bret didn't screw Bret, but just about every other one of his enemies left in the company did.
