Younger wrestling fans may not understand the giddy excitement with which older wrestling fans sometimes talk about Bill Goldberg. Bursting onto the scene in 1997, the man was just another wrestler with a shaved head, wearing black trunks and boots. That discounts the rapid appeal he'd build up, Goldberg became one of the hottest talking points in all of wrestling in just a few months. In 1998, World Championship Wrestling had really taken over from the WWF as the top promotion in North America. Goldberg represented the chance to sustain that success. Whilst the likes of Sting had been feuding with the nWo and Hollywood Hogan, Goldberg had amassed an impressive win streak. His short matches were fierce in nature, and fans rallied behind him. The Summer months of '98 were kind to Goldberg, WCW couldn't overlook his burning star quality any longer. Winning the WCW World Title from Hogan, he established himself as one of the promotion's few home grown success stories. People went crazy for the man, and it was virtually absurd to imagine that WCW wouldn't attempt to push him to the top of cards as a featured attraction.
