Prior to her retirement after WrestleMania this year, AJ Lee was unquestionably the biggest Diva in the division. And while her past was actually brought up on occasion to further on-screen storylines, it wasnt necessarily a work; much of what was said on WWE programming was in fact true. In an interview in December 2012, AJ Lee told the New York Daily News how scraping for cash was the norm during her pre-WWE days, with periods of her childhood spent eating at food banks and living in cars, motel rooms, and even friends houses across her home state of New Jersey. She did manage to enroll at NYU, but financial issues later forced her to drop out after just six months. Keen to pursue her wrestling dream though, she soon took on multiple jobs to fund her trainingunder Ring of Honor star Jay Lethal, incidentallybefore debuting after just six months. After signing with WWE in 2009, AJ went on to challenge the idea of the stereotypical Diva and as she so eloquently put it herself, save the female division.
