It€™s strange to think that WCW has now been defunct for longer than it was ever an active promotion. It was founded by billionaire Ted Turner when took over Jim Crockett Promotions and renamed it after the television show that was one of the most popular programmes on Turner€™s TBS network. Over its thirteen years in existence it grew from being a prominent regional promotion to a global powerhouse that rivalled Vince McMahon and the WWF. WCW saw dozens and dozens of prominent wrestlers pass through their doors. The late eighties saw Cactus Jack, Vader and The Great Muta, while the nineties saw Hulk Hogan, €œMacho Man€ Randy Savage and Goldberg among many others. As popular as WCW was, and as big as their stars were, it had a huge reputation for being horribly mismanaged and unorganised as control of the company was passed around like a hot potato creative clauses stifled storytelling. Wrestling for WCW must have been like flying by the seat of your pants. This devil-may-care attitude to booking led to a lot of of mishaps and misfires, but it also saw the company take some real risks and told some innovative stories.
