It's safe to say that we'll never see the likes of an 8 year title reign again. You can go ahead and group the 4-year reigns in which Hulk Hogan and Bob Backlund enjoyed with that too. But would anyone in the 70's or 80's imagined the number of title changes we see today? Not likely. Between Bruno Sammartino's 1963 title win, all the way until the the last stretch of Hogan's run in 1988, the WWE championship saw 8 title changes in about 25 years. In the 25 years that followed, there were well over 100 WWE title changes, with some years actually featuring more than 8 themselves. The 1990's saw an insane number of championship changes, as the WWE was moving to a more attention-deficit type of program. Recent years have seen a little more of a throwback to decades past, as both John Cena and CM Punk have had championship reigns that lasted over a year. To put the likes of Bruno Sammartino's reign in perspective, it would be like if CM Punk had won the WWE title in his debut, and didn't lose it until his unceremonious exit from the company.
