After WCW management disrespected Flairs close friends Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard, waves were made by Vince McMahon to acquire them to add to his stable of talent. While they wouldnt initially jump, Vince McMahon got the idea to later pursue them. Lost in that pursuit, were his conversations with Ric Flair in the spring of 1988. According to Flairs book, To Be The Man, Vince called him with a straightforward question. McMahon smoothly asked, What do you think about coming to the World Wrestling Federation? From there he laid out a plan that involved him challenging the Macho Man Randy Savage in the main event, for the WWE Championship at the first SummerSlam, which was being held later that year. Its stunning to think what could have happened had Flair jumped at that moment. We pretty much have to rewrite the next 3 years of WWE. Naturally, Flair was flattered with that offer, but didnt consider himself politically astute to deal with a man he didnt really know that well. He was thrilled with the chance, but Flair was ultimately loyal to the NWA.
