When The Velveteen Dream arrived on NXT TV by interrupting Shinsuke Nakamura, many fans struggled to hide their disgust. The overblown character was more than a little embarrassing, and the future didn’t look particularly bright for the young Patrick Clark. Those same fans can be forgiven for being a little busy now trying to remove egg from their faces.

The Velveteen Dream could well be the next homegrown megastar in NXT. The NXT Championship hasn’t been held by a WWE developmental talent since Bo Dallas, way back in 2014. In many ways, the WWE Performance Center can be viewed as a disappointment when it comes to creating new stars. The Velveteen Dream could be the man to change all of that.

Will he become NXT Champion in 2018? That remains to be seen, but the young man from Washington D.C. absolutely should be the man that developmental builds around over the next 12 months. That can be as a face or as a heel - Patrick Clark is potentially that good.
