10 Things You Didn't Know About The WWE Title

10. The Original Belt Was Stolen

It didn't take long for the title to make headlines.

Iconic babyface Bruno Sammartino was only the second champion when the original belt was stolen from his car in 1965. Bruno was in a restaurant eating when it happened, and authorities never managed to find the strap. So, left with no other choice, the company had to order a new one.

This was obviously less than ideal. Sammartino had beaten Buddy Rogers to win the thing back in 1963, and was in the midst of an impressive 2,803 day reign with the gold. The then-WWWF had to commission another prize, because it just wouldn't do to have strongman Bruno stroll down the aisle without his belt.

The WWWF Title was quickly becoming a symbol of excellence thanks to Sammartino's hard work, meaning this was quite the setback for Vince McMahon Sr and pals. The champ can't even enjoy a bite to eat after defending the title at Madison Square Garden, eh?!
