Ed Leslie, who gained notoriety in the WWF as Brutus The Barber Beefcake, was seriously injured in a parasailing accident in 1990. While he was healing, the WWF came up with a brilliant idea to put him under a mask and repackage him as a character with no name (later known as The Mariner). In early 1991, after heels finished their squash matches on episodes of WWF Superstars (particularly Rick Martel and wrestlers managed by Jimmy Hart), this masked man would run into the ring, briefly attack the heels, and then run back out. He never made his debut, the character was abruptly dropped, and Leslie would return later that year, back as Brutus Beefcake, where hed host his Barber Shop segment on WWF Wrestling Challenge.
