The Undertaker received some well-deserved time off in 1994; he'd been running pretty hard since debuting in 1990 and asked Vince McMahon if he could take a few months to heal up and spend time at home. The boss said yes, and 'Taker was written out in a Casket Match with Yokozuna at the Royal Rumble.

He didn't show back up again until that SummerSlam feud against his doppelgänger, meaning Raw went almost eight months without 'The Deadman' on it. In an era that was lacking in the star power department, that was a bit of a disaster. The WWF needed all the big names they could get, but 'Taker was absent.

That left Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Razor Ramon, Lex Luger, Yokozuna and maybe a few others (Owen Hart, Diesel etc) alone to carry the product, and it wasn't enough. Even four years into his run, it was clear that 'Taker was vitally important to the WWF machine.

They still booked him in naff feuds though.
