Scarecrows, according to lore, used to be used to ward off evil spirits. It is for that reason that their use in Bray Wyatt's entrance was incredibly clever and creative. Despite his status as a babyface, there is no spirit in today's WWE more evil than The Undertaker, who has made a career of burying opponents alive, sacrificing Superstars and nearly forcing a then-innocent Stephanie McMahon into a dark wedding. That Wyatt would use such mythical objects to surround himself with, to escort him to the ring, was a brilliant bit of brainstorming on either his or WWE Creative's part. Either way, it was solid storytelling that helped get over the cerebral nature of the character, one that went under-appreciated by the audience, through no fault of their own. After all, the history of scarecrows is not something most fans are likely to be well versed in.
