10 Times WWE Worked Their Audience Into A Shoot

4. Brock Lesnar Bloodies Randy Orton (SummerSlam 2016)

SummerSlam 2016 ended under a shroud of controversy. Brock Lesnar "wrestled" Randy Orton in the night's main event, but it felt more like a real-life scrap than a coordinated, scripted match, with the duo brawling their way around ringside for just under 12 minutes.

It concluded in jarringly violent fashion. 'The Beast Incarnate' mounted the downed 'Viper,' then bludgeoned his skull with a series of violent shoot elbow strikes. Busted open and bleeding profusely, Orton was rendered incapable of continuing by the referee, who declared Brock the winner via technical knockout.

The level of brutality led many fans to believe that Lesnar had gone into business for himself, but it wasn't a shoot. Brock and Orton were both pitched the idea on the night of the event, but Randy did leave with more than he bargained for: it took 10 stitches to close his head wound, and a concussion kept him sidelined for a month.

WWE didn't just work their audience into a shoot that night, though. Only Orton, Lesnar, and Vince McMahon knew of the plans beforehand, and a furious Chris Jericho confronted 'The Beast' for hurting his friend after the match, oblivious that it was pre-planned.
