Triple H has played a predictable game since taking over in WWE, but what will NOBODY see coming?
Triple H is enjoying the sort of critical acclaim he'd probably assumed gone forever less than a year ago.
When Vince McMahon, John Laurinaitis, Bruce Prichard and others paid a visit to the Performance Center in mid-2021, they took great interest in a bunch of jacked up trainees playing local law enforcement on screen and turned them into NXT's upper midcard for a day-glo revamp of the derided Capitol Wrestling Center.
By this point, health issues removed Paul Levesque from the game completely, but even he couldn't have predicted that his return would bypass Orlando entirely when he starting stepping back into the suit in 2022.
Vince McMahon's failings as WWE's chief creative force left the shows in such a state that Hunter was permitted several free hits as a booker. Bringing first names back and allowing wrestlers to call themselves wrestlers again were p*ss easy wins, but the COO was celebrated all the same.
With his summer nights drawing in and Survivor Series season approaching, Triple H is about to be truly tested - just how can he starting shaping his cards ahead of a Royal Rumble-to-WrestleMania run that should be one of the most fascinating ones in company history? How will he follow form? And how might he not quite live up to lofty expectations?
10. Hit Row Will Die Again
The surprising returns of Hit Row and others to WWE have at very least revealed that Triple H will commit to the things he really enjoyed even if there wasn't much evidence to suggest they were a great idea.
The group connected to an extent back in 2021, but that extent was in part to an extremely generous Capitol Wrestling Center crowd and the desperation for something - anything - to save the rotting soul of the black-and-gold era NXT. Top Dolla, Ashanti "Thee" Adonis and B-Fab neither succeeded nor failed on both fronts, and along with Isiah 'Swerve' Scott were made to eat releases anyway just weeks after a main roster promotion.
Signs aren't great that the 2022 vintage will go much better. It's taken as read that the trio (Swerve was immediately scooped by AEW in a deal that already looks shrewd) will fare better second time around, but that applies to around 95% of the roster post-Vince. But as well as the rapturous response to their return? Unlikely. The matches haven't banged, fans haven't retained their enthusiasm in the buildings, and the less said about the interruption rap on August 19th, the better.
None of this is to say 'The Game' will give up on them, but that might not be enough...
