Would there have been room for D-Generation X without the nWo?

That's an interesting question, and one you shouldn't palm off. Had the New World Order not rampaged over WCW like a monochrome menace spray-painting everything in sight, then there's a chance those sophomoric antics of Shawn Michaels, Triple H and Chyna wouldn't have come to be.

Their anti-authority approach was preceded by the nWo. That's a fact, and almost everything about DX had some nWo fingerprints all over it; even the addition of Rick Rude as the degenerates "insurance policy" seemed to ape Ted DiBiase's short run as the New World Order's rich benefactor.

Gimmicks like those played by D-Generation X, Steve Austin and others were a direct response to McMahon's realisation that he had to be more edgy. There's a chance he would've stayed family family without the nWo's own cutting edge bad-assery.
