4. Goldberg Defeats Kevin Owens

There was absolutely no need for Goldberg to become WWE Universal Champion this year. As successful as his return was, introducing gold to his feud with Brock Lesnar did nothing to enhance either man’s position in the company (as both were already among WWE’s biggest stars), and while Goldberg was drawing huge crowd reactions throughout his comeback’s first two acts, this noticeably dwindled when he became champion.

His match with Kevin Owens at Fastlane lasted just 22 seconds. KO was distracted by the arrival of his former best friend, Chris Jericho, and that allowed Bill to run right through him and secure the gold. It kept Owens protected, and brought his miserable title reign to an overdue end, but those were the only two positives to come from the situation.

Goldberg didn’t make a single title defence before taking it to WrestleMania 33, where he was defeated by Lesnar in under five minutes. His worthless reign had a detrimental effect on what had been WWE’s hottest feud up to that point, and ultimately doomed us to over a year with a part-time champion, as Brock looks set to keep hold of the Universal Title until ‘Mania 34.
